FPCC Support Fund Highlights for July 2020

Dear ,We hope you and yours are doing and keeping well? We would like to share with you the following key updates regarding the FPCC Support Fund’s projects/investments in July:

  • National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR): We are supporting the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in carrying out research on developing a Viral PCR that would be used to detect the presence of antigen. It is intended that the Isothermal PCR platform would be utilized to develop respiratory diseases syndromic assays, starting with a multiplex assay for SARs-CoV-2 and Influenza. The impact of this innovation will include having a fast and sensitive point of care test for SARS-CoV-2 virus deployable to remote areas of Nigeria, using PCR technique and not just antibodies/antigen testing.

  • Ota Walk-in/Drive-in Testing Center: The FPCC Support fund supported Flying Doctors Nigeria to expand testing support of 687 suspected COVID-19 patients between June and July 2020.

  • LUTH Drive-In Testing: Through our partnership with LifeBank, we are supporting the Lagos University Teaching Hospital with the setup of a COVID-19 Walk-In/Drive-In Free Testing Facility which will be managed by LUTH’s Isolation Center team in partnership with the LifeBank team.

  • Phillips Respironics Ventilators: We donated five (5) Phillips Respironics Ventilators each to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

Techno-Policy Paper on COVID-19: We have provided seed grants to the Center for Applied Policy Alternatives towards the development of a 3-part techno policy paper focused on “Combating the Impact of COVID-19 on the lives and livelihood of Nigerians, Women and Other Protected Groupings”. This Research is headed by Prof. Melvin Ayogu and the three focus areas are as follows:

  • Techno Policy 1: Focus on Containment - Prevent and Control. Download the policy paper here
